The Center For Work-Life Policy

12.3.07

The Center for Work-Life Policy (CWLP) ( www.worklifepolicy.org) is a nonprofit think tank which seeks to fully realize female and multicultural talent over the lifespan. Under the aegis of the CWLP, in 2004 Sylvia Ann Hewlett (Center for Work-Life Policy and Columbia University), Carolyn Buck Luce (Ernst & Young) and Cornel West (Princeton University) formed a private sector task force entitled the Hidden Brain Drain Task Force which targets an urgent challenge of our age: how to retain and advance highly qualified women and minorities. The 40 global corporations that comprise the Task Force are united by an understanding that the full utilization of the talent pool is at the heart of competitive advantage and economic success.

The first cycle of research completed by the Hidden Brain Drain Task Force, “Off-Ramps and On-Ramps: Keeping Talented Women on the Road to Success,” was published by the Harvard Business Review in March 2005. The second cycle of research, “Leadership in Your Midst: Tapping the Hidden Strengths of Minority Executives,” was published by the Harvard Business Review in November 2005. A companion report, Global Multicultural Executives and the Talent Pipeline, was released in April 2006. A third cycle of research, “Extreme Jobs: The Dangerous Allure of the 70-Hour Workweek,” was published in the Harvard Business Review in December 2006. A companion report, Seduction and Risk: The Emergence of Extreme Jobs, was released in February 2007. In 2008–09 the Task Force will target two research areas: “Pipelines and Progression: The Advancement of Women in Science and Technology” and “Bookend Generations: Leveraging Talent and Finding Common Ground.”

Sylvia Hewlett's recent book, Off-Ramps and On-Ramps (Harvard Business School Press, 2007), highlights the work of the Hidden Brain Drain Task Force and showcases -- with case studies and toolkits -- 18 models of best practice.
